Tunnels and ITS 2011
The share volume of urban tunnels for dense traffic situations, lengthy tunnels on the main highways, running up to 20 km and longer, tunnels carrying traffic through city centers in a complex manner, all suggest that secure and efficient traffic management and safety measures are becoming crucial.

We have through some 15-20 years seen that ITS Intelligent Transport Systems and Services are in the forefront of efficient and safe traffic solutions. These solutions have a considerable payback in a national economic perspective. These solutions make it possible to gain a higher throughput of traffic on the existing road network.

Tunnels are today the main user of ITS equipment, due to the potential for catastrophic accidents. Maintenance of this equipment is expensive. Life cycle cost is important.

In tunnels the need for efficient and safe solutions are mounting, together with the increase in the traffic density. The planning for traffic breakdown situations in tunnels, are gaining in importance. The possibility of an increase in frequency for complete standstill of traffic in the vital, urban tunnel networks, makes ITS solutions critical, and in cooperation with other more traditional measures.

The Symposium is administered by Tekna - the Norwegian Society of Chartered Technical and Scientific Professionals. The Symposium committee has agreed that it is feasible to issue this Call for Papers through Tekna. The Symposium is backed by The Public Roads Administration, who will take on the chair in the evaluation of the Paper submissions. It is anticipated that this "Tunnels and ITS" symposium will be organised biannually. This will depend on the results and evaluation of the Symposium in 2011.

You can find more information about the symposium here.
